  • Governor Bobby Jindal has appointed Patrick E. O'Keefe to the Judicial Compensation Commission, subject to Senate confirmation. The fifteen member commission serves to evaluate salaries payable to judges and make recommendations to the legislature concerning these salaries.

  • Ashley L. Belleau, a partner in the New Orleans office, was sworn in as National Treasurer of the Federal Bar Association in September in Huntsville, Alabama. Ms. Belleau's official duties as Treasurer started on October 1st. Prior to becoming National Treasurer, Ashley served on the Board of Directors for two years and as the Federal Bar Association's General Counsel. She is a past President of the New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and a past Vice President for the Fifth Circuit.

  • The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty is recognizing and honoring Judge Jay Zainey of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana for creating the Homeless Experience Legal Protection (H.E.L.P.) Program. Judge Zainey will be given the Bruce F. Vento Award at the NLCHP's 9th Annual McKinney-Vento Awards dinner on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 in Washington, D.C. Montgomery Barnett has regularly provided volunteers to Judge Zainey's H.E.L.P. Program in New Orleans and the firm congratulates Judge Zainey on receiving this honor.

  • Patrick O'Keefe, a partner in the New Orleans office, recently authored a book review which was published in the May 2007 edition of The Federal Lawyer. Mr. O'Keefe reviewed Master of Souls: A Mystery of Ancient Ireland, the sixteenth full-length mystery novel by Peter Tremayne (the nom de plume of Celtic scholar Peter Berresford Ellis).

  • Harvey Koch was listed in The International Who's Who of Construction Lawyers 2007. Mr. Koch has been recognized by his peers as one of the leading practitioners in the field of construction law. As a further testament to his expertise, Mr. Koch was invited by Aspen Publishing to author the Louisiana chapter to its publication: 50 State Licensing of Contractors, Architects and Engineers.

The members of the New Orleans Bar Association's Maritime and International Law Committee annually select a member who is a long-standing member of the Maritime and International Law Committee, is highly respected among his peers and contributes significantly to the local admiralty bar.   • Patrick O'Keefe participated as a judge in the Thurgood A. Marshall Memorial Moot Court Competition which was sponsored by the Federal Bar Association. Each Spring, in conjunction with the FBA mid-year meeting in Washington D.C., teams from law schools around the country take part in the the Thurgood A. Marshall Memorial Moot Court Competition. Final rounds are held in the Court of Military Appeals.

  • Daniel Lund participated as a judge in the 2007 National Trial Competition Regional Qualifier hosted by LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. The National Trial Competition was established in 1975 to encourage and strengthen students advocacy skills through quality competition and valuable interaction with members of the bench and bar. The program is designed to expose law students to the nature of trial practice and to serve as a supplement to their education. The event at LSU was one of fourteen Regional Competitions. The winners from the various regions participate in the National Final held in Texas.

  • Jim Simpson, a partner in the Gulfport Office, was elected Municipal Court Judge for the City of Long Beach, Mississippi.

  • Gordon Grant will receive the Distinguished Maritime Lawyer Award from the New Orleans Bar Association at a luncheon to be held at the Hotel Intercontinental on Tuesday, April 24, 2007.

  • Gordon Grant and Patrick O'Keefe were admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. The United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces exercises worldwide appellate jurisdiction over members of the armed forces on active duty and other persons subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The Court is composed of five civilian judges appointed for 15-year terms by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. Cases on the Court’s docket address a broad range of legal issues, including constitutional law, criminal law, evidence, criminal procedure, ethics, administrative law, and national security law. Decisions by the Court are subject to direct review by the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Court was in special session in New Orleans on February 13, 2007 as guests of Loyola Law School through the Court's "Project Outreach" program. Oral argument was presented in the case of United States v. Isaac D. Roberson in the en banc courtroom of the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

  • Brandi Schwartz, an associate in the Gulfport office, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Young Lawyers Division of the Mississippi Bar Association. She practices in the areas of general litigation and products liability defense. Brandi graduated, cum laude, from Millsaps College in 1993 and received her J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1996. She received mediation training from the Accord Institute and Southern Arbitration and Mediation in 1999 and from Harvard Law School’s Program of Instruction for Lawyers in 2001. In January 2006, she was selected as one of the mediators for the Mississippi Hurricane Mediation Program sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Insurance. Brandi is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, the Harrison County Bar Association, the Harrison County Young Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association. She has worked as a volunteer for the Mississippi High School Mock Trial Competition and for Disaster Legal Services at the Disaster Recovery Centers following Hurricane Katrina. She also serves as a member of the Mississippi Young Lawyer’s Assistance Committee. Brandi and her husband, Robert, reside in Gulfport where she serves on the Board of Directors of the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center and is a Life Member of Junior Auxiliary of Gulfport.

The presentation was given at the annual Summer School Revisited program held by the Louisiana State Bar Association.

  • Joseph P. Tynan was elected to the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Bar Association for a three-year term expiring in 2009.

  • John Y. Pearce was awarded the Fleur De Lis Leader Award by the New Orleans Bar Association in recognition of his outstanding service to NOBA and the legal community.

  • Eugene J. Radcliff was published in the Winter/Spring Edition of the American Bar Association's Trial Practice Journal. His article, titled "A Practical Look at Daubert, Voir Dire and Report Preparation Issues Re: Expert Witnesses," was co-authored with Jeffrey B. Crockett of Jorden Burt L.L.P. in Miami, FL.

  • John Y. Pearce, the managing partner of Montgomery, Barnett, was elected Chairman of the Board of Children's Hospital in New Orleans in April of 2006. Mr. Pearce has served on the board of this non-profit entity since the mid-1990's.

MARCH 2006

  • Terrel J. Broussard, partner with Montgomery Barnett, will take part in a panel discussion at Loyola University Chicago School of Law as part of the annual Race and Law Symposium. The topics will include racial and legal issues surrounding Hurricane Katrina and its victims. This event is sponsored by the American Bar Association and takes place March 18, 2006 at the Water Tower campus at 25 East Pearson in Chicago.   • Terrel J. Broussard has been asked to serve on the New Orleans City Council's Hurricane Katrina Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to advise the City Council regarding the recovery of the city from the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and to recommend solutions that would enhance emergency preparations of the city.

  • Eugene J. Radcliff, currently of the Baton Rouge office, recently completed negotiations on behalf of Mr. Eddie Feigner, renowned as softball’s greatest pitcher and founder of "The King and His Court" 4 man softball team. The deal includes a full length feature film with Powerhouse Films, a documentary, a reality television series, and two interactive video games.

December 2005

  • Effective December 1, 2005, James C. Simpson of the Gulfport office, was named as General Counsel to the Harrison County Development Commission, the economic development entity for Harrison County, Mississippi.

  • Terrel J. Broussard, currently working in the Baton Rouge office, was recently appointed by Governor Blanco to the Louisiana Recovery Authority - Housing and Redevelopment Task Force.

  • Montgomery, Barnett was featured, along with several other local businesses, in an article in the December 4, 2005 New Orleans Times-Picayune Money Section regarding New Orleans businesses that put expansion plans into action following Hurricane Katrina. Administrator, Malcolm Martin, was quoted in the article, explaining that the firm, in the three months following the storm, has grown from two locations to four, adding offices in Baton Rouge and Mandeville to complement the home office in New Orleans and the Gulfport location, which opened almost four years ago.
