Jay Augustine is a partner with the law firm Montgomery Barnett .  He is a highly skilled litigation and employment law attorney who has successfully represented private, public, and individual clients in trial and appellate court matters.  Mr. Augustine is admitted to practice law before all Louisiana state and federal courts and the United States Supreme Court.  He began his professional career as a law clerk to Louisiana Supreme Court Associate Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson.  Immediately prior to joining Montgomery Barnett, Mr. Augustine was managing director of The Augustine Firm, APLC.

Mr. Augustine successfully defended the state of Louisiana 's interest against a major corporation's damages claim, after being appointed special counsel by the Louisiana Department of Justice in multimillion dollar complex litigation.  He has also successfully represented municipalities in contentious Fair Labor Standards Act litigation and advised other governmental entities on the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and civil service rule compliance.  He previously served as election law counsel to a member of the United States Senate.

Mr. Augustine is general counsel to the City of Baton Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge Personnel Board and an adjunct professor of law at Southern University Law Center.  Additionally, he is a member of the faculty of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA), Lorman Educational Services, Inc. and the National Business Institute.  He also frequently presents Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses to other licensed attorneys.

An active member of the community, Mr. Augustine serves as general counsel to the Baton Rouge Black Chamber of Commerce and 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Ltd.  He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Capital Area Legal Services, a former member of the Editorial & Advisory Board of the Louisiana Bar Journal, and is a graduate of the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Baton Rouge and Council for a Better Louisiana's Leadership Louisiana.

After earning an economics degree from Howard University and winning the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Belford V. Lawson National Oratorical Scholarship, Mr. Augustine was commissioned as an active duty infantry officer in the United States Army.  Following four years of decorated service, including receipt of the highest peacetime proficiency badge attainable, Mr. Augustine earned his law degree from Tulane University School of Law.
